Revision as of 15:25, 20 December 2007

Shoulders that have been constructed over the years vary in width, material, thickness, etc., often withing the same section of roadway. The task of maintaining shoulders requires a variety of methods, as shown in the following planning guides.

Repair Sod and/or Aggregate Shoulders and Approaches

Code: R225

Definition

The time and expenses incurred to expand installation and maintenance of asphalt concrete and aggregate roadway shoulder, approaches and clear zones. Includes cost for maintaining sod.

Purpose

To remove ruts, low areas, and high spots on sod and aggregate shoulders.

Scheduling

As needed throughout the year

Recommended Equipment

  • Motor Graders
  • Dump Truck
  • Roller
  • Pull Broom
  • Shouldering Machine Attachment
  • Distributor
  • Disc
  • Tractor w/Pull Blade
  • Grade Master
  • Traffic Control Equipment (See Traffic Control for Field Operations)

Recommended Material

  • Aggregate
  • Cold Mix
  • Liquid Asphalt
  • Rotomillings
  • Seed

Recommended Procedure

1. Place traffic control devices as needed.

2. blade or disc shoulder, or blade approach.

3. Shoot liquid asphalt, if eneded.

4. Place material, if needed.

5. Roll

6. Repeat as necessary to obtain desired height.

7. Broom as needed; clean up work zone.

8. Reseed sod shoulders.

9. Remove traffic control devices.

Safety

Exercise caution when rolling near shoulder edge. Refer to Policies, Rules & Regulations - Employee Handbook.

Other Considerations

Commercial approaches are maintained to normal shoulder line or 10 ft., whichever is less. Side road and private approaches are maintained to normal R/W line.
