This article establishes procedures for Laboratory testing and reporting materials used in the construction of chain-link fence and woven wire fence. Refer to Sec 1043 for MoDOT's specifications.

1043.5.1 Sample Preparation

When preparing test specimens of wire fabric, special attention should be given to obtaining test specimens according to the test procedures shown in EPG 1043.5.2.1 Chemical Tests.

1043.5.2 Procedure

Laboratory tests to be performed on the sample are designated by the inspector in the remarks area of SiteManager.

1043.5.2.1 Chemical Tests

When there is doubt, a distinction may be made between zinc and aluminum coating by immersing a small specimen of the sample in concentrated nitric acid. If the coating is zinc, a vigorous reaction will occur; if the coating is aluminum, little or no visible reaction will occur. The procedure for determining mass of zinc coating shall be according to AASHTO T65. The procedure for determining mass of aluminum coating shall be according to AASHTO T213. When stripping the coating from materials in the form of pipe, particular attention should be given as to whether the "inside" portion of the test specimen has been coated. These methods shall be used in all cases where the area of the test specimen can be accurately calculated. On specimens shaped so that the area cannot be calculated, the mass of coating shall be determined with a magnetic gauge, in accordance with ASTM E376. Refer to Field determination of weight of coating for additional information on the proper use of the magnetic gauge. Original test data and calculations shall be recorded in Laboratory workbooks. Test results shall then be recorded through SiteManager.

1043.5.2.2 Physical Tests

Physical characteristics shall be measured and test results and calculations shall be recorded through SiteManager.

Size of wire for chain link fabric, fabric fasteners, barbed wire, woven wire and brace wire shall be defined as the average of the maximum and minimum diameters determined at any one cross-section of the wire. The diameters of chain-link fabric, fabric fasteners, tension wires, aluminum alloy barbed wire and the thickness of vinyl coating shall be determined and reported in the units called for in Sec 1043. When reporting the gage of steel barbed wire, woven wire and brace wire, the standard gage known as "Steel wire gage" shall be used. Tensile strength of chain-link fence fabric, barbed wire and aluminum alloy fabric fasteners shall be determined according to AASHTO T68.

Dimensions of zinc coated steel pipe posts, brace rails, and gate frames shall be measured for conformance to Standard Plan 607.10 and ASTM F 1083. Tolerances of dimensions are to be according to ASTM F 1083. Steel H section posts do not have specified dimension tolerances and are acceptable so long as they were manufactured to the standard size shown on the plans.

Dimensions of aluminum alloy posts, brace rails, and gate frames shall be measured for conformance to ASTM B241. Tensile properties of these materials shall be determined according to AASHTO T68.

1043.5.3 Sample Record

The sample record shall be completed in SiteManager, as described in Sample Record General Information Bulldozer.jpg, and shall indicate acceptance, qualified acceptance or rejection. Appropriate remarks, as described in EPG 106.20 Reporting, are to be included in the remarks to clarify conditions of acceptance or rejection. Test results shall be reported on the appropriate templates under the Tests tab.
