Category:Milled Rumble Strip Retrofit Initiative
From Engineering Policy Guide
Introduction
One of the goals of MoDOT is to provide wet reflective pavement markings on major roads to enhance safety. After looking at several options on how to best achieve this goal, the direction of retrofitting conventional paint and bead combinations over rumble strips on existing major roads, where they do not exist, seems to be the most cost effective, long term solution.
The benefit of rumble stripes is that they are wet reflective using MoDOT's standard paint and bead combinations. Other existing technologies for providing wet reflective markings involve the use of expensive tapes or special, wet reflective beads.
Adding rumble strips enhance safety by providing errant vehicles the audio and vibration warning that they are leaving the driving surface. Retrofitting the rumbles also helps to fill the gaps of safety enhancements provided through various past initiatives. Because of the safety benefits of the rumble stripes, these projects will be funded using Federal "Open Container" funds which are dedicated to making safety improvements on the system.

Districts must submit an RES to the Environmental Section for these projects.
These projects consist of the following basic parameters:
- The retrofit milled rumbles will only be done on edgelines.
- The rumbles will be milled on the existing edgelines.
- The contractor will clean the rumbles and remove any millings as part of their work.
- MoDOT forces will stripe the rumbles after completion.
- There are two different widths of rumbles to be milled.
- Standard 12 inch wide rumbles will be milled where the full-depth pavement extends 1 ft. or more in to the shoulder and it does not cross a joint.
- Mini-rumbles will be milled where the full-depth pavement width is 12 ft. or less.
- Bid items will be:
626-99.09 Full Width Asphalt Edgeline Rumble Strip 626-99.09 Mini Asphalt Edgeline Rumble Strip 626-99.09 Full Width Concrete Edgeline Rumble Strip 626-99.09 Mini Concrete Edgeline Rumble Strip
- A standard JSP templet and plans have been created for use on these projects.
- There will be no stripe removal on these projects.
- Itemized traffic control will be provided in the plans in the form of both stationary and moving operations. The contractor will have the option to choose their traffic control operation. Traffic control items will be paid only once per contract for each active milling operation. Sufficient quantities need to be provided for the anticipated crews necessary to complete the work within the time frame allowed.
- Work zone hours limitations may apply
- Completion date will be October 1.
Projects will be done over a 2-year period. Districts 2, 3, 5 and 10 will be done in 2009. Districts 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will be done in 2010.
