When a wearing surface is applied with the newly constructed Type H barrier, a pedestal is recommended to keep the holes for the guardrail attachment in the same location with respect to the top of the barrier. The Type H barrier may also be used on bridges where a non-mountable sidewalk is present on either side of the bridge (speed limit not greater than 45 mph). If a Type H barrier is used on the outside edge of sidewalk a fence attachment is also required to meet the minimum railing height requirements for pedestrians.
