Current General Services Specifications (MGS) By Subject

This article establishes procedures for inspecting, acceptance and reporting of reinforced concrete arch culvert. Refer to Sec 1035 for MoDOT’s specifications.

For Laboratory testing and sample reporting procedures, refer to Laboratory Testing Guidelines for Sec 1035.

1035.1 Apparatus

All requirements for these arch culverts are specified in AASHTO M 206 except the material requirements for cement, coarse aggregate, reinforcing steel and fine aggregate are specified in Sec 1036.

Acceptance under AASHTO M 206 involves either crushing of arch sections or compressive tests on cylinders or cores. Which method is performed is at the option of the manufacturer.

Every manufacturer providing arch culverts under Sec 1035 must furnish all testing equipment required under AASHTO T 280.

(a) Rule with suitable graduations to accurately measure the material to be inspected.

(b) OK - MoDOT stamp.

(c) Weather-resistant marking material.

(d) Applicable AASHTO specifications.

1035.2 Procedure

The bases of acceptance are specified in AASHTO M206.

The procedures for inspecting and reporting the components used in manufacturing reinforced concrete arch culverts shall be as applicable for each component.

PAL materials should be visually checked and the paperwork verified when possible.

Requirements placed on special or modified designs are outlined in AASHTO M 206. Further procedures can be found in EPG 106.16 Special Designs.

Acceptance cylinders, if chosen, are the responsibility of the manufacturer. An inspector’s job is to review the results for compliance with specification. It is good procedure to randomly validate the manufacturer’s results by making cylinders for comparison.

1035.3 Report

All reports of materials and inspections are to be made using AASHTOWARE Project (AWP).

When a PAL material is checked it is appropriate to make a disposition remark to the AWP Sample record associated with the PAL ID#.
