773.2 Maintenance Planning Guideline for Cleaning and Repair of Pipes

Code: R319

Definition

The time and expenses incurred from removing and replacing pipe culverts. Includes time and expenses incurred for installing a new lining in an existing culvert.

Purpose

To clean, align, and repair pipe culverts and related structures.

Scheduling

As needed, year around.

Recommended Equipment

  • Trucks
  • Water Tank w/Trash Pump
  • Concrete Mixer
  • Jack
  • Loader
  • Skid Steer Loader
  • Chainsaws
  • Tube Flusher

Traffic Control Equipment (see Traffic Control for Field Operations)

Recommended Material

  • Concrete
  • Plastic Joint Compound
  • Form Material
  • Water
  • Curing Compound

Recommended Procedure

1. Call Dig Rite and MoDOT to check for utilities.

2. Place traffic control devices as needed.

3. Fill open joints with joint compound.

4. If headwall, flared end section, or pipe end section is settled, align section with jack or loader and compact material under section for support.

5. If ends of corrugated metal pipe are bent and restricted, open with jack.

6. Clean excess compound and debris from work area.

7. Remove traffic control devices.

Safety

Call before you dig to locate utilities (1-800-DIG-RITE). Watch out for "pinch points." Wear all appropriate PPE. Reference the Safety Policies, Rules & Regulations-Employee Handbook.

Other Considerations

Check if Corps of Engineers permit is needed.

773.3 Maintenance Planning Guideline for Cleaning and Repair of Box Culverts

Code: R319

Definition

The time and expenses incurred from removing and replacing pipe culverts. Includes time and expenses incurred for installing a new lining in an existing culvert.

Purpose

To clean, repair, and fill voids of box culverts and restore roadway drainage.

Scheduling

As needed, year around.

Recommended Equipment

Recommended Material

  • Concrete
  • Water
  • Quarry Run Rock
  • Form Material
  • Cement
  • Agricultural Lime

Recommended Procedure

1. Call Dig Rite and MoDOT to check for utilities.

2. Place traffic control devices as needed.

Clean Out

1. Remove drift and debris as needed.

Repair

1. Remove bad concrete, form, and pour concrete.

Fill Voids

1. Fill large voids and eroded outlet areas with quarry run rock and if needed grout with concrete.

2. Internal voids along the barrel sides and bottom should be mudjacked.

3. Remove traffic control devices.

Safety

773.4 Maintenance Planning Guideline for Replacing Pipes and Box Culverts

Code: R319

Definition

The time and expenses incurred from removing and replacing pipe culverts. Includes time and expenses incurred for installing a new lining in an existing culvert.

Purpose

To replace deteriorated pipe and box culverts, which have caused the roadway or entrance to settle.

Scheduling

As needed, year around.

Recommended Equipment

  • Trucks
  • Backhoe, Excavator, Loader, or Motorgrader
  • Mechanical Compactor
  • Dragline
  • Crane
  • Breaker
  • Trenching Protective System/ Sheeting
  • Traffic Control Equipment (see Traffic Control for Field Operations)

Recommended Material

  • Pipe & Accessories
  • Joint Compound
  • Roadway Surface Material
  • Precast Box Culvert
  • Backfill Material

Recommended Procedure

1. Call Dig Rite and MoDOT to check for utilities.

2. Develop trenching safety plan with competent person and supervisor.

3. Place traffic control devices as needed.

4. Remove existing pipe or box.

5. Install protective system in trench, if necessary.

6. Prepare subgrade.

7. Place new pipe or box and seal joints.

8. Remove protective system.

9. Compact material in lifts around and over pipe or box.

10. Place and compact surfacing material.

11. Clean work area.

12. Remove traffic control devices.

Safety

Call before you dig to locate utilities (1-800-DIG-RITE). Hard hats are required. Watch for sharp edges and "pinch points." Wear all appropriate PPE. Refer to Risk Management On Line Manual Section 2.4 for Trenching and Shoring Procedures. Also comply with the Safety Policies, Rules & Regulations-Employee Handbook.

Other Considerations

If entire roadway is to be closed, local news media, schools, emergency services, and law enforcement agencies should be informed in advance.

773.5 Maintenance Planning Guideline for Cleaning and Reshaping Earth Ditches

Code: R316

Definition

The time and expenses incurred for the installation, repair and maintenance of roadway drainage ditches, structures, and all slide repairs. This includes installing and maintaining pavement drainage systems.

Purpose

To keep the roadbed dry and maintain stability and proper drainage while keeping culvert pipes open.

Scheduling

As needed, year around.

Recommended Equipment

Recommended Material

  • Seed
  • Mulch
  • Silt Fence, Straw Bales, Rock (for Berms), Triangular Silt Dyke, Coir Fiber Logs
  • Sod
  • Erosion Control Blankets

Recommended Procedure

1. Call Dig Rite and check for MoDOT utilities.

2. Place traffic control devices as needed.

3. Shape ditch and remove material as needed.

4. Clean loose material from roadway.

5. Set up erosion control as necessary.

6. Seed and mulch as necessary.

7. Remove traffic control devices.

Safety

Call before you dig to locate utilities (1- 800-DIG-RITE). Watch for traffic when operating equipment on the roadway. Wear all appropriate PPE. Also comply with the Safety Policies, Rules & Regulations-Employee Handbook.

Other Considerations

When excavating in lawn areas, adjacent property owners should be contacted prior to beginning work, if possible, to explain intent of operation.
