Current General Services Specifications (MGS) By Subject

This article establishes procedures for inspecting, sampling and reporting precast concrete flared end sections. Refer to Sec 1032 for MoDOT’s specifications.

For Laboratory testing and sample reporting procedures, refer to EPG 1032.3 Laboratory Testing Guidelines for Sec 1032.

1032.1 Apparatus

(a) Rule with suitable graduations to accurately measure the material to be inspected.
(b) OK - MoDOT stamp.
(c) Weather resistant marking materials.

1032.2 Procedure

1032.2.1 Acceptance by Inspection Method

Acceptance of precast concrete flared end sections is to be based on acceptance of materials incorporated into the end section, compressive strength of concrete as determined from cylinders or cores and inspection of the finished end section.

Confirm that the materials incorporated into the product are approved, that reinforcement is properly placed, that compressive strength of representative concrete is greater than 4,000 psi and that the finished section has proper dimensions and appearance. If steel fibers are used instead of standard reinforcement, confirm that acceptable proof-of-design testing for the flared end section has been conducted within the last three years and that the fiber type and dosage rate match the tested design. Additionally, check that end sections have no protruding steel fibers.

End sections that are compliant on the basis of inspection are to be stamped MoDOT OK. The AASHTOWARE Project (AWP) Sample I.D. is to be printed next to the OK stamp. The stamp and marking should be on the inside of the left side of the flare as you look into the flared end, so it remains visible after installation.

End sections are to be reported to the contract using AWP.

1032.2.2 Acceptance by Certification Method

The District Construction and Materials Engineer may review the manufacturer's quality control procedures and make an annual recommendation to Construction and Materials regarding the appropriateness of acceptance of material by the certification process. Manufacturers approved to produce on certification are listed the table below. Material from listed manufacturers may be accepted based on certification, manufacturer's quality control documentation and compressive strength tests on samples. If steel fibers are used instead of standard reinforcement, quality control documentation shall show acceptable proof-of-design testing for the flared end section has been conducted within the last three years and that the fiber type and dosage rate match the tested design.

Compressive strength of a sample, dimensions of representative end sections, workmanship and quality control processes and documentation are to be checked a minimum of twice each year. Additionally, if end sections contain steel fibers instead of standard reinforcement, check documentation of steel fiber use and that representative end sections have no protruding fibers. If they are not acceptable, the manufacturer will be notified immediately that they are no longer listed and any existing product is ineligible for MoDOT work. The manufacturer would be allowed to make new product under the procedure in EPG 1032.2.1 Acceptance by Inspection Method.

End sections that are clearly marked with a listed manufacturer's name are acceptable on the basis of that name and do not require the MoDOT OK stamp or a Sample I.D. number on the end section.

To retain listing as a certified producer, the manufacturer must report any sections shipped for MoDOT work before, or the day of, shipment so the material may be reported by the district to the contract using AWP.

Compressive strength is to be determined for each 300 flared end sections of each size and type offered for inspection regardless of the inspection method, and should be recorded in AWP.
